La scène (du grec ancien , skènè : tente, lieu couvert, qui désignait à l'origine le bâtiment situé derrière l'endroit où jouaient les acteurs, qui servait de coulisses) désigne, au théâtre, laire de jeu (avant-scène comprise) et les coulisses, par rapport à la salle où sont les spectateurs, où jouent les acteurs. On lappelle également, dans le lexique théâtral, le plateau (théâtre).
Du point de vue dramaturge, ce mot signifie, en outre, les divisions dun Acte (théâtre), déterminées à partir de 1650 environ par lentrée ou la sortie dun ou plusieurs personnages. La scène se subdivise parfois en Tableau (théâtre).
