Il fait partie intégrante de Windows Server 2003 R2 et des versions ultérieures des systèmes d'exploitation serveurs de Microsoft.
AD FS s'intègre avec l'Active Directory, en l'utilisant comme un fournisseur d'identité. AD FS peut interagir avec d'autres WS-
et SAML 2.0 conformes aux services de fédération.
