components

Component-based programming is currently carried out using mainstream object-oriented languages. These languages have to be used in a highly disciplined way to guarantee flexible component composition and extensibility. This paper investigates abstractions for component-oriented programming on the programming language level. We propose a simple prototype-based model for ï¬rst-class
components on top of a class-based object-oriented language. The model is formalized as an extension of Featherweight Java. Our calculus includes a minimal set of primitives to dynamically build, extend, and compose software components, while supporting features like explicit context dependencies, late composition, unanticipated component extensibility, and strong encapsulation. We present a type system for our calculus that ensures type-safe component deï¬nition, composition, and evolution. 1...
Superorganism.pdf 26pespmc1.vub.ac.be - publié le 01/12/2011...to: Journal of Social and Evolutionary Systems The Global Superorganism: an evolutionary-cybernetic model of the emerging network society Francis HEYLIGHEN CLEA, Free University of Brussels, Pleinlaan 2, B-1050 Brussels, Belgium E-mail: fheyligh@vub.ac.be ABSTRACT. The organismic view of society is updated by incorporating concepts from cybernetics, evolutionary theory, and complex adaptive systems. Global society can be seen as an autopoietic network of self-producing
components, and therefore as a living system or “superorganismâ€. Miller’s living systems theory suggests a list of functional components for society’s metabolism and nervous system. Powers’ perceptual control theory suggests a model for a distributed control system implemented through the market mechanism. An analysis of the evolution of complex, networked systems points to the general trends of increasing efficiency, differentiation and integration. In society these trends are realized as...
MediatorEvolution.pdf 27pespmc1.vub.ac.be - publié le 01/12/2011...Evolution: a general scenario for the origin of dynamical hierarchies Francis HEYLIGHEN CLEA, Free University of Brussels, Pleinlaan 2, B-1050 Brussels, Belgium E-mail: fheyligh@vub.ac.be ABSTRACT. A general scenario is proposed to understand the evolutionary transitions that lead to the emergence of higher level systems through the assembly of independent
components. First, multilevel emergence is reviewed in general as the result of variation and selective retention of assemblies. It is emphasized that when the components are dissipative (e.g. living systems) the process is complicated by the on-going competition for scarce resources between the agents. While there is a selective pressure to achieve synergy, and thus avoid conflict, competition remains potentially present, leading to the free rider problem. To tackle this problem, a control must evolve to...

In the event of an unavoidable accident, applications are needed to mitigate the accident consequences. PReVENT structure and the relation of project
components show clearly that the integration of activities and close cooperation is needed also in the actual work in addition to a common platform created in the end of the project. Issues like the use of sensors and sensor data fusion and a common high level architecture are areas that are prerequisites for the following integration activities. Meeting the objectives The PReVENT main objectives were to: 1. develop, demonstrate, test and evaluate preventive safety applications, 2. assist technological...
21895_UpWind_Report_low_web.pdf 29ewea.org - publié le 20/03/2012... No significant problems have been found when upscaling wind turbines to that scale, provided some key innovations are developed and integrated. These innovations come with extra cost, and the cost / benefit ratio depends on a complex set of parameters. The project resulted for instance in the specification of mass / strength ratios for future very large blades securing the same load levels as the present generation wind turbines. Thus in principle, future large rotors and other turbine
components could be realised without cost increases, assuming the new materials are within certain set cost limits. As the UpWind project`s scope is very wide and the project has laid the basis for essential future strategies for decreasing cost of energy, UpWind contributed considerably to the recommendations of the European Wind Energy Technology Platform and the foundation for the European Wind Initiative. It is clear from the conclusions of UpWind that the European Wind Initiative`s research agenda is...
